Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/124/6190
Date
[c. 1343]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Mulcastre (Mulcaster), son of William de Mulcastre.
Name(s)
de Mulcastre (Mulcaster), Robert
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Robert de Mulcaster requests remedy concerning the farm of the manor of Bolton in Allerdale. He states that the manor was granted to his father by the king's father, on payment of £40 annually, but two years later the manor was taken back into the king's hands by the escheator. However, William and his heirs have still been charged with the £40 per year, and he is now charged with £1640.
Nature of endorsement
Send this petition with a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, and, after inquiring into the truth of the contents of the petition, they should do justice accordingly.
Places mentioned
Bolton in Allerdale, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
William de Mulcastre (Mulcaster), father of the petitioner
[Edward I], King of England
Richard de Haveryng, former escheator.
Note
Richard de Haveryng served as escheator North of Trent between April 1299 and April 1305, thus dating the grant to 28 Edward I (1299-1300), and Haveryng's seizure to 1301-2. Given that the petitioner is being pursued for £1640, at £40 per year this would amount to charges for 41 years, suggesting a date for the petition of around 1343.
