Description
Petitioners
William Moorton (Morton), priest and bedeman.
Name(s)
Moorton (Morton), William
Addressees
King.
Occupation
priest and bedeman
Nature of request
[Parts of this petition are missing or illegible.]William Morton requests the imposition of specific taxes on shipping and fishing in Mount's Bay in Cornwall, payable to him or the governor of the works, to pay for the completion of a jetty under construction in the bay. He states that no such harbour currently exists, to the great peril of all using the bay and passing through that area.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] For the Earl of Salisbury, 7 October.[on dorse] Let letters patent for seven years be issued to William and the governors of the quay, that they may receive money from all ships and fishermen [at rates given]. And that the money raised be spent according to the form given in the petition.
Places mentioned
St Michael's Mount, Cornwall
Mount's Bay, [Cornwall]
Marghasiou (Marazion), [Cornwall].
People mentioned
[Thomas Montague], Earl of Salisbury.
Note
The resultant grant (which recites the basic terms of the petition and hence supplies much information now missing due to the damage) was made on 13 October 1427. This petition bears the same extensive damage as many other documents from the 1427-8 Parliament (for examples, see SC 8/121/6007-8, 6011, SC 8/124/6185), while the October date associates it with the first session of that Parliament.
