Nature of request
Walter del Ile requests the restoration of four groups of lands.1) He requests the restoration of lands granted to his father by John Balliol in Whitsome, which he and his father held until they were ousted by Robert Brus.2) He also requests lands worth 100s granted to his father by Edward I for his loyal service. These were to be lands in Whitsome and Horndean forfeited by Ramsey and others, enemies of the king.3) He states that Edward I granted to his father lands in Stobswood and Hardens forfeited by William de Meyners.4) He states that he was seised of two tenements in Berwick-upon-Tweed.1)
Nature of endorsement
It is said that John de Balliol granted all his lands in Whitsome to John del Ile, who held them until ousted by Robert de Brus, who granted them to Nicholas Fouler and Roger Pryngel. Pryngel died, and Fouler was killed in the siege of Berwick, and the lands were taken into the king's hands. It is also said that Walter has always been faithful to the king.2) Concerning the other two petitions, let them be sued before the king.3) Concerning the fourth petition it is said that the tenements are in the hands of ... and he should sue at common law.4) Concerning the first petition, he is to have a writ to the sheriff of Berwick to deliver the tenements to him to hold as his father once held them, and no other lands in the kings hands, saving to the king and anyone else.
