Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/124/6155
Date
[1376]
Description
Petitioners
Tenants and Lieges of Lowestoft.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The people of Lowestoft request the repeal or amendment of a grant made by the King to the people of Great Yarmouth, which stated that no merchandise be sold within seven leagues of that town, and granting the people of Great Yarmouth jurisdiction over their market at Kirkley Road.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Lowestoft, Suffolk
Kyrkelerode (Kirkley Road), [Suffolk]
Great Yarmouth, [Norfolk].
Note
Dated on the guard to 1376 or 1382-2, with reference to various charters and confirmations. However, since all the grants are mentioned as being made by the king rather than the 'king's grandfather', it seems highly unlikely that the petition dates to Richard II's reign. As such, this would seem to be the petition answered in the parliament of 1376 (Rot. Parl. II, p.330), revoking a charter granted on 30 August 1372.
