SC 8/124/6154
Date
[1310-1322]
Description
Petitioners
John de Loundres (London), engineer, burgess of Conway.
Name(s)
de Loundres (London), John
Addressees
King.
Occupation
engineer
Nature of request
[Part of the upper section of this petition is missing]John de London, engineer, states that, for his good service to the king's father and his imprisonment in Scotland, he petitioned the king, who granted him the bailiwick of the raglotry of the commote of Creuddyn and the woodwardries of Arllechwedd Uchaf and Arllechwedd Isaf, by letters patent [the grant is recited, dated 5 June 1310]. He therefore requests that it be made according to this first grant and the first petition. Also, John states that the Justice of Wales deprived him of the two woodwardries, contrary to the king's grant, and therefore requests that they be restored.
Nature of endorsement
Petitions of Wales.Whereas John de London, engineer, shows to the King's Council his commission under the King's seal in the form given in this petition, it is ordered to the justice of Wales to allow him to hold the tenements according to the letters, and, if they are taken into the king's hands, to restore the two woodwardries, together with all issues received since they were taken, so that he answer to the king in full, unless he considers that they ought not be restored, in which case he should certify the king immediately.
Places mentioned
Conway, [Caernarfonshire, Wales]
Scotland
Creuddyn commote, [Caernarfonshire, Wales]
Arllechwedd Uchaf, [Caernarfonshire, Wales]
Arllechwedd Isaf, [Caernarfonshire, Wales]
Windsor, [Berkshire].
People mentioned
[Edward I], King of England
Eleanor [of Castille, Queen of England], mother of the king
Roger de Mortimer, Justice of Wales.
Note
The missing section makes the precise terms of the petition difficult to reconstruct. Rees gives a date of 1309-10, but it would appear that London was seeking the restoration of the recited grant of 1310. As such, the seizure by Mortimer which prompted this petition must have occurred somewhat later, possibly many years after the 1310 grant was made. Mortimer served two terms as Justice of Wales, in 1308-15 and 1316-22.
