Date
[c. 1312]
Description
Petitioners
Commonalty of County Limerick.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The people of Limerick ask that the king expel all Irish monks from the abbey of Monasteranenagh, and replace them with English monks. They claim that, after the conquest of the area, Irish monks had caused great disturbances and harboured law-breakers, and thus Henry III ousted all Irish monks, purchasing the abbey from Citeaux and newly founding it with English. However, the abbots of Mellifont have claimed that the abbey belonged to them, and ousted the English, replacing them with Irish monks, who have again caused great peril and destruction to the people. They also state that Michael, former abbot of Mellifont, made a recognisance that the abbots of Mellifont would not interfere in Monasteranenagh, promising £500 for each contravention. By the terms of this recognisance the abbey now owes £10,000.
Nature of endorsement
Let this petition be sent to the justices and chancellor of Ireland, and let them be ordered that, after examining the petition and being fully informed, they should do what seems right for the good of the king and the abbey, and for the better keeping of the peace in the region.
