Description
Petitioners
Thomas of Lancaster, Earl of Lancaster.
Name(s)
Lancaster,; Earl of Lancaster, Thomas
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Earl of Lancaster makes a series of requests.1) He asks that he be granted the wardship of the manor of Levisham, seized into the king's hands due to the minority of the heir of Godfrey de Mawes, claiming that Godfey was not a tenant in chief of the crown.2) He requests to be granted the office of seneschal of the household, which he claims by virtue of his honour of Leicester.3) He requests a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, allowing him the issues of forfeitures, granted to him by the king's father.4) He requests delivery of certain fees in Surrey and Sussex appertaining to the honour of Leicester. Inquests were ordered by the late king, but were not executed due to the king's absence in Scotland,
Nature of endorsement
[on face, following each individual request]1) Let the inquests returned into Chancery on the death of Godfrey be viewed, and the king shall be advised. And at the last parliament it was answered that a search was to be made in the Exchequer, and a writ sent to the Treasurer and Barons to certify this at the quinzaine of Easter last past, this same day being given to the earl to show his right and evidences, and no writ is to be sued until then2) At the last parliament it was answered that a search was to be made in the Exchequer and the wardrobe, and the findings certified to the chancery at the same quinzaine, and the earl is to have writs from the chancellor to the treasurer and chamberlains and the keeper of the wardrobe, and because no writ has been sued nothing has been done but if he wishes to sue a writ he is to be granted one.3) At the last parliament he showed his charter to the council and the council was advised that there was nothing in the charter by which he was due these forfeitures, and this was told to his council.4) Let the inquisitions be brought.[on dorse] As to the request made to the king by the Earl of Lancaster concerning the purparty of ..., the king has graciously granted this and ordered that he is to have whatever is necessary in Chancery.

Note
The response to the first request cited here largely matches that appearing in Cole, Docs. Illus. English History, p.8, given in response to a much longer, more detailed petition on this matter. It seems likely that the present petition is simply a summary of that petition and three others, and hence would date to the same period, the 'last parliament' mentioned in the responses probably referring to the York Parliament of autumn 1318.
