SC 8/123/6147
Date
[c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Clothworkers of London.
Addressees
King in Parliament.
Nature of request
The clothworkers of cloth in London request the confirmation of their charters, and the repeal of a grant made by Edward III to foreign weavers (Flemings, Brabanters and others), allowing them to practice their trade in the city without contributing to the 20 marks annual payment made by the weavers guild to the crown for their privileges.
Nature of endorsement
Let this bill be sent into the Chancery, and summon there by writ the Flemings, Brabanters and other aliens concerned in order for them to show their charter and respond to the articles contained in this bill, and return it so that the court may decide according to law and reason.
Places mentioned
London
Southwark, [Surrey]
Flanders
Brabant.
People mentioned
[Edward III], King of England.
Note
Dated on the dorse to? 1376, with reference to SC 8/143/7128, SC 8/43/2127 and SC 8/110/5463. However, the petition clearly refers to a charter granted to the aliens by the king's grandfather, which is clearly that issued in 1352 in response to SC 8/110/5463. This would seem to date the petition to the reign of Richard II. SC 8/143/7128 is a near-duplicate of this petition with a different final sentence, while SC 8/43/2127 is also a near-duplicate, but omits the clause relating to the king's grandfather. It seems likely that SC 8/43/2127 was presented towards the end of Edward III's reign, but that no decision was reached before Edward's death and thus the other two were re-submitted early in Richard II's reign.
