William Laweles.
Name(s)
Laweles, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Laweles requests letters of pardon for the murder of Belle, who he claims he killed in self-defence. He states that it is ordained by statute that pardons should be granted in such circumstances.
Nature of endorsement
The Council at Westminster made order on 29 May in the king's ninth year that a writ be issued to have the body of William Laweles, and the reason for his detention in prison, at the Chancery on 2 June next.To Thomas Haseley.
Places mentioned
Newgate prison, [London]
London.
People mentioned
William Haukeford, justice
William Belle, carpenter
Thomas Haseley.
Note
Dated on the guard to?1408, with reference to the mention of the king's ninth year (9 Henry IV). However, the reference on the dorse to Thomas Haseley would seem to suggest a later date, either 9 Henry V or 9 Henry VI. Haseley appears to have been appointed as one of the clerks of the crown in Chancery in 1415, was clerk of the house of Commons from 1414, and died c.1449-51. This would date the order to either 29 May 1421 or 29 May 1431, and since a parliament was in session in May 1421 this seems the most likely.
