Reference
SC 8/123/6136
Date
[? c. 1331]
Description
Petitioners
John Legat of Kimpton.
Name(s)
Legat, John
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
John Legat seeks remedy against John de Ver, who has attacked him and left him in such fear of his life that he is no longer able to remain in his home or exercise his office as constable of Hithcin half-hundred. He states that Cranemere, the sub-bailiff of the half-hundred, raised the hue and cry against Ver and his companions on the Wednesday before St Bartholomew in the king's fourth year, and therefore, as constable, Legat tried to arrest him. However Ver, in order to avoid arrest, attacked him, and continues to ride around the area, threatening him and others.
Nature of endorsement
Let him have a writ of trespass in his case.
Places mentioned
Kemyton (Kimpton), [Hertfordshire]
Hitchin half-hundred, Hertfordshire.
People mentioned
John de Cranemere, sub-bailiff of Hitchin half-hundred
John de Ver of Kimpton.
Note
According to the petition, the hue and cry was raised on the Wednesday before the feast of St Bartholomew in the fourth year of the present king Edward. The handwriting would suggest this was Edward III, thus making this date 22 August 1330. The petition was presumably presented at some later point, although the reference to the fourth regnal year might suggest a gap of at least a year (or it might be expected to refer to the feast 'last past'). A date of c. 1331 has therefore been suggested.
