Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/123/6129
Date
[1330]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses and Commons of Leicester.
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
The people of Leicester request payment for goods and chattels taken from them by the officials of Mortimer and his companions when they accompanied the royal household to Leicester at Christmas two years previously, for which they have not yet been paid.
Nature of endorsement
They shall have a writ to those who are living that they should make reasonable payment to them for the items taken by their purveyors for their use.
Places mentioned
Leicester, [Leicestershire].
People mentioned
Roger de Mortimer
Oliver de Hingham (Ingham)
Simon de Bereford.
Note
Mortimer's party reached Leicester with the royal household in early January 1329. Therefore, the petition would appear to have been presented to the Westminster parliament of November 1330, where Mortimer and Bereford were tried and executed. The wording of the petition suggests that Mortimer and the others were alive when it was written, while the endorsement suggests that at least some of them were dead by the time this was added.
