Description
Petitioners
Amice (Fitz Simon), sister of Fulk Lestrange and widow of Richard Fitz Simon.
Name(s)
Fitz Simon, Amice
Addressees
King and Council.
Nature of request
Amice states that in the thirteenth year of the present king's reign, Simon Fitz Richard brought an assize of novel disseisin against her, concerning the manor of Great Dunmow. Due to the maintenance of the earl of Hereford (to whom Simon had promised to give the manor), she lost the case and the manor, and requests that the king enquire into this.
Nature of endorsement
It seems to the Council that nothing can be done concerning the people contained in this petition.Coram Rege.
Places mentioned
Great Dunmow, Essex
Huntingdonshire
Essex.
People mentioned
Fulk Lestrange (Strange), brother of the petitioner
Richard Fitz Simon, former husband of the petitioner
Simon Fitz Richard, valet of the earl of Hereford
[Humphrey de Bohun], Earl of Hereford
Robert de Maddyngle, justice
Humphrey de Walden, justice, steward of the earl of Hereford
John de Lachelegh.
Note
This petition would appear to be a copy of SC 8/5/247, and thus would also seem to date to the period 1320-1322. The petition refers to an assize of 13 [Edward II] (1319-20), and the manor was granted to Bohun on 8 July 1320. It presumably also pre-dates the deaths of both Simon Fitz Richard on 4 March 1322 and Humphrey de Bohun on 16 March 1322, as neither is specified as being deceased.
