Description
Petitioners
Baldwin de Spinallo (Despynall, de Spynale), Prior of Lapley.
Name(s)
de Spinallo (Despynall, de Spynale), Baldwin
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Prior of Lapley
Nature of request
The Prior requests remedy on a number of connected issued.1) He states that Shareshulle and others broke into the abbey, stealing a variety of goods and muniments. He sued a writ in chancery, and Alton and others were ordered to enquire into the matter. They found that the complaint was true, and that Shareshulle and his comapnions should pay damages to the value of 110 marks, for which they have been indicted.2) He complains that, when the priory was in the king's hands, Shareshulle went to the bishop of Chichester and asked for the wardship of the priory along with Gobert de Lapyon, and as a result the prior was ousted from his house. Shareshulle then neglected the priory, to its great destruction, destroying the mill and cutting down the woods. Robert was made proctor of the monks of St Remi, and brought false cases against the prior.3) He states that Sharesulle had not paid sums owed for his time as keeper of the priory, and for this reason the people of Northamptonshire took goods worth £10 from the prior's estates in compensation for these unpaid debts.

Note
The reference to the 'Bishop of Chichester, then chancellor' clearly refers to Robert Stratford (bishop 1337-1362, chancellor of the Exchequer, 1331-4, chancellor 1337-8, 1340), rather than his predecessor John Langton, who was chancellor far earlier. This would therefore date the petition to some point after Stratford's appointment to Chichester, and probably relatively soon afterwards. Presumably the reference to the Chancellor refers to the Chancellorship of England rather than of the Exchequer, and this would then date the petition to after Stratford's removal on 6 July 1338.The date of Shareshulle's attack is given as Friday in the feast of St. Fabian and St. Sebastian in the ninth year (1336). However, this is presumably an error for the eighth year (1335), as that feast fell on a Saturday in 1336.
