Description
Petitioners
Abbot and Monks of St Mary Graces.
Addressees
King and Council in Parliament.
Nature of request
The Abbot and monks of St Mary Graces request that the king confirm letters of Richard II granting them 110 marks annually from the farm of Scarborough, and issue warrants for payment to the farmers of Scarborough. They state that this annuity had been granted to them by Richard as compensation for the loss of various estates which had originally been granted to them by James Audley in accordance with the wishes of Edward III, but which Richard had then seized and granted to his brother, John de Holland.
Nature of endorsement
The King, of his special grace, has granted to the abbot and monks both the confirmation of the other grant as mentioned in the petition, and also the arrears of the 110 marks for the term of Michaelmas last, according to the content of the same petition.

People mentioned

Richard II, King of England
John de Holland, Earl of Huntingdon.
Note
The petition evidently dates to the reign of Henry IV (grandson of Edward III, son of the Duke of Lancaster). However, on 13 March 1400, Henry overturned the letters of Richard II, restoring the estates seized by Richard to the abbey (CPR 1399-1401, pp.274-5), and thus rendering the 110 marks annuity redundant. Given the address, presumably this petition was presented to the 1399 Parliament, but the response was soon superseded by the more generous later grant.
