Description
Petitioners
Mayor, Aldermen and Commonalty of London.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The petitioners state that assizes in the City of London can only be held before the sheriffs and the coroner (or his deputy). However, the coroner and his deputy are often absent, resulting in damaging delays. They therefore request that they be allowed to hold assizes before the sheriffs of the city alone.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] Concerning the coroner of London.[on dorse] The king wishes that, when such assizes are held at the Guildhall in London, the sheriffs of the city should inform the coroner or his deputy in writing. If the coroner or the deputy do not then appear, for the ease of the parties the justices should proceed to take the assize, notwithstanding the absence of the coroner or his deputy. Providing always that this should not be to the detriment of the office of the same coroner.
