Reference
SC 8/122/6066
Date
[? c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Henry of Lancaster, Earl of Lancaster.
Name(s)
Lancaster, Earl of Lancaster, Henry
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Coventry, [Warwickshire]
Warwickshire.
Nature of request
The Earl of Lancaster requests that certain franchises granted to the people of Coventry, which have since been repealed at the suit of the lords and commons, should not be re-granted, nor others granted which are prejudicial to the lords or commons of the county of Warwickshire without due process.
Nature of endorsement
The franchises granted to the people of the town of Coventry have been repealed with the assent of the whole council, and should not be re-granted nor any others granted without due process.
Note
Dated on the guard to? c. 1334, with reference to CChR 1327-41, p.305, a grant of 2 March 1334 to the merchants of Coventry that they be free from certain payments throughout the realm. However, the petition refers to a grant to the people of Coventry, not just the merchants, and although the handwriting would seem to date from the same general period, there is little to suggest the two are linked.
