SC 8/122/6062
Date
[? 1380-? 1381]
Description
Petitioners
John Buckingham, Bishop of Lincoln, Henry Despenser, Bishop of Norwich, Philip le Despenser, knight, Hugh le Despenser, knight, and John de Staumford (Stamford).
Name(s)
Buckingham; Despenser; Despenser; Despenser; de Staumford (Stamford), John; Henry; Philip; Hugh; John
Addressees
King and Council.
Occupation
Bishop of Lincoln; Bishop of Norwich
Nature of request
The petitioners ask the king to consider various enfeoffments and grants regarding the manor of Burley. The manor was held by Henry de Lisle, who enfeoffed Anne and Thomas Despenser, Newenham and Wydevyle when he left to go to Prussia. Lisle died in prison, following which Edward III made an agreement with Anne, exchanging the manor for lands in Northamptonshire. However, the petitioners dispute the legality of this agreement, since Thomas was overseas when this occurred and did not assent.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned

Thomas le Despenser, son of Anne le Despenser
John de Newenham, clerk
Richard Wydevyle (Woodville)
[Edward of Woodstock, Prince of Wales]
Edward III, King of England
Thomas de Ferrers
Gerard de Lisle
William de Ferrers.
Note
Clearly datable to the reign of Richard II from the references to the Prince and the King's grandfather. Thomas le Despenser enfeoffed the manor to the petitioners and others on 13 March 1380, and the petitioners in turn enfeoffed a Robert de Plesyngton on 18 June 1383. Presumably the petition dates from after the enfeoffment, but probably to before Thomas' death in February 1381.
