Robert Lincoln, clerk.

Lincoln, Robert
Addressees
King and Council in Parliament.

Nature of request
Robert Lincoln requests that he be delivered from prison, where he has been committed following his wrongful arrest and conviction on a spurious trespass charge brought against him following allegations by Burton. He states that he had been summoned before the council to undertake secret business, but had then been arrested by officials of the Abbot of Westminster. He was initially released due to his privy seal letter of protection, but was then re-arrested on Burton's charge and committed to the Marshalsea, contrary to the special protection afforded to him on account of his business.

Note
Dated on the guard to? 1383, but no firm evidence cited.A Robert de Lincoln of London was among a group of people ordered to be brought before the Council by the king's sergeant-at-arms on 20 May 1378 (CPR 1377-81, pp.252-3). If this is the same man, this is probably the summons mentioned in the petition. This would presumably have occurred at the next parliament, held in the autumn of 1378, and since the petition refers to the summons occurring at the previous parliament 'before Christmas', this would in turn suggest that the petition itself may have been presented to the parliament of April-May 1379. However, this is far from conclusive, and given that it was at some stage attached to SC 8/122/6057 it may be a slightly later copy.
