Date
[? c. 1377]
Description
Petitioners
Goldsmiths of London.
Addressees
[None specified].
Nature of request
For the safety of the treasure of the realm the petitioners seek the confirmation of their charters with an additional clause granting the wardens of their guild the power to search everywhere in the city and outside in hiding places, such that none of their guild (or others) connive at any of the aforesaid deceits, with the wardens able to dispense justice and take their persons and fines to the mayor or the sheriffs, who have the power to imprison such trespassers until they are judged before the said wardens in their own courts. And also to grant the goldsmiths (for themselves and their successors) the bond of the lords and commons of the realm that they will sell any gold or silver vessels only to the petitioners and that they are to have the true value or payment in coin from the tower of London, such that the vessel is marked with the leopard's head and the sign of the goldsmith.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
London
Tower of London, [London].
People mentioned
Mayor and sheriffs of London.
Note
Dated on the dorse to? 1404, with reference to SC 8/121/6042, or to 1393 (with reference to CPR 1391-6, p.219 (which seems unconnected), or to 1377 (un-referenced). The handwriting would suggest a date in the mid- to late-fourteenth century. The near-duplicate at SC 8/57/2849 has been dated to c. 1377, which seems far more likely than 1404.
