Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/121/6038
Date
[1393]
Description
Petitioners
John Lovell (Lovel).
Name(s)
Lovell (Lovel), John
Addressees
King and Lords of Parliament.
Nature of request
Lovell asks that Clopton and other justices be appointed to examine various accusations made against him by Manston. He states that, at the last Parliament at Westminster, Manston presented a false petition claiming that Lovell had ousted him from his manor of Manston, imprisoned his tenants, and threatened the jurors arraigned at Dorchester to hear the case. Lovell denies all the charges.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Manston, [Dorset]
Dorchester, [Dorset].
People mentioned
Thomas Manston
John Glanvyll
John Thorner
John Auncell
Walter Clopton, Chief Justice [of King's Bench].
Note
Commissions in the terms requested were issued on 6 December 1391 and 11 February 1393 (CPR 1391-6, pp.79, 238). Manston's petition at SC 8/63/3111 is clearly the original petition, referred to here and in the second commission as being presented in the 'last parliament held at Westminster', and giving rise to the first commission. The present petition must therefore have been presented to the following Winchester parliament of 1393 (possibly in response to a second petition from Manston), and resulted in Clopton's second commission.
