Reference
SC 8/121/6028
Date
[c. 1383-c. 1393]
Description
Petitioners
Mayor, aldermen and commonalty of London.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The Mayor, aldermen and commonalty of London request the better enforcement of fishing restrictions on the Thames and Medway enacted under the king's grandfather (Edward III). They claim that over-fishing of fry, and the construction of weirs and other 'engines', is destroying the fish stocks, to the great damage of the city.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
London
River Thames
River Medway.
People mentioned
[Edward III], King of England.
Note
Dated on the guard to either 1383 (with reference to Rot. Parl. III, p.201, a common petition on this general issue) or 1393 (with reference to CPR 1391-6, p.353, a commission into these matters on the Thames and Medway). The latter reference appears the most relevant, itself relating to a statute on the taking of immature fish passes in 13 Richard II (Statutes of the Realm, II, pp.67-8). The petition refers to the statutes of the 'king's grandfather', these being those of 1351 and 1371, designed to protect fish and to clear the rivers for traffic. A further statute was passed in the Parliament of 1397-8, but since it is not mentioned here, the petition presumably pre-dates that Act.
