Nature of request
The mayor and commonalty of Lincoln request the right to purchase lands to the value of £120 per annum, to help them in paying the various charges due from the city. They state that they are charged with a fee farm of £180 per annum, as well as £100 for each lay subsidy, but are unable to raise the money, partly because the various franchises in the city do not contribute, and also because there are only 200 people in the city eligible to pay.
Nature of endorsement
[on face] For Lord Cromwell 13 May[on dorse] The king, by the advice of the lords spiritual and temporal, grants to the mayor and commonalty of Lincoln, for the relief of the said city, that they should have licence to purchase lands and tenements not held of the king in chief or of any other person by knight service, to the value of £100 per annum for a reasonable fine in the Chancery.
