Harrington to Cumberland, repeating his instructions to send over eight battalions and nine squadrons. Inadequacy of forces in Britain to deal with the rebels and the threatened invasion by France and Spain. On receipt of this letter Cumberland is to send to Willemstad all the remaining British infantry in Flanders, including the Ostend garrison and the returned prisoners. He should send at least 6,000 men, making up the number if necessary with Hessians. They are to be self-sufficient and will be landed at Gravesend. Cumberland is to concert with Königsegg and Waldeck over the dispositions of such of his forces as remain. The king has just ordered that instead of the nine regiments of dragoons, Cumberland is to send Ligonier's horse, Bland's and Hawley's dragoons, and the remainder of Sir Robert Rich's [dragoons]. The king has signed commissions according to the enclosed list [SP 87/18/91]. Deployment of the Hessians in Britain. A second company of artillerymen is to be sent over. Dated at Whitehall. PS. enquiring whether Lieutenant Campbell has gone to Scotland with permission. ff. 185-188
