Carteret to Wade: General Chanclos has requested that some of the troops newly arrived at Ostend should remain there to strengthen his garrison, and the king has agreed to this. The two battalions over and above the four British and six Dutch will not now be sent. Embarkation of General Smissaert. Allowances for Dutch troops who must remain, at the States' request, under Wade's command. As the troops are there for the defence of Flanders, it is fair that they should forage in the country. He encloses copies of his letters to Burrish and Generals Chanclos, Smissaert and Read [SP 87/14/99]. Dated (OS) at Whitehall. ff. 163-166
