Wade [to Carteret]: disposition of allied troops around Oudenaarde. Four bridges have been thrown across the Scheldt. Unexpected surrender of Menin. He encloses a copy of a letter from Saxe to Cronstrom [SP 87/14/82], whose son-in-law was governor of Menin. With the arrival of the reinforcements all British units are now up to or above their strength. The French are besieging Ypres, about to besiege Fort Knokke, and may make an attempt on Ostend before the end of the campaign. He suggests that reinforcements for Ostend should be placed on the English coast. The enemy have double the numbers of the allies, and can be attacked only on an equal front. Dated at camp at Berlegem. ff. 132, 133
