Description

The king's sentiments on Flanders as expressed to Boetslaar, Dutch minister: the king is spending as much per annum as in the previous war. He has 20,000 British and 16,000 Hanoverians in his pay in Flanders. He pays £300,000 to Maria Theresa and £200,000 to the king of Sardinia in subsidies. He keeps a large fleet in the Mediterranean. He is aware that the [Dutch] republic is also spending large amounts, and that this cannot be sustained indefinitely.

In order to preserve the unity of the allied army in Flanders, he has renewed his instances to Maria Theresa to allow Prince Charles of Lorraine to return and resume command. Reasons why the king has ordered the army to advance on the barrier towns. As the only available reinforcements are the 20,000 men the Dutch hold in reserve, he urges them to commit as many of these as they can. Traun's [Austrian] army of 80,000 men should cross the Rhine and attempt a diversion in France. ff. 118-120
