Description

The Slave Trade; acknowledges receipt of Secretary of State's Circular letter of 9 February regarding what Mathew states 'a Question likely to be agitated in Parliament, relative to the Slave Trade; and to be aware of any inaccurate Reports, which may lead to disturb the quiet of the Colony;' reports that the first step that occured to him and with Mr. Byam's concurrence, was to send for the printer of their Gazette and 'to prevail on him to be very cautious, in any insertions from the daily papers on this subject, and that if he thought it incumbent on him, as it is much the Topic of Conversation here, to say something, He might briefly say; - We hear from good authority, that His Majesty has been pleased to refer to the Consideration of the Committee of Privy Council the present State of the Slave Trade, with the Effects of Consequences both in Africa & the Colonies, in order that His Majesty may be possessed of the most accurate Information on this very important Subject - '; reports he will as soon as may be give very private information to the Militia Colonels to 'pay attention to the Conduct of the negroes, lest any unfavourable Rumors should have been circulated among them, and I believe this precaution will be alone sufficient for the present purpose.'
