Description

Report of Cranley Thomas Kerby on 1 collective petition (95 people, including Mary Gould, wife of William Gould and Mary Gould, wife of Edward Gould, all from the New Forest in Hampshire) on behalf of William Gould, Edward Gould and Stephen Hatch, of Eling in the New Forest, Hampshire, 'labouring men', convicted at the 'last Easter Sessions for the County of Southampton', in 1798, for cutting down trees, property of the 'Warden, fellows and scholars of Winchester College.' There is a letter from Kerby to Christopher Shaw advising him of a petition for Hatch but not for the other 2 prisoners. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, first offence, are penitent and all have large dependent families. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to enlist as soldiers 'into some regiment going abroad,' to prevent the prisoners from contacting the remainder of their gang; annotated 'pardons prepared 11 August 98'.
