Report of R. Spiller, R. Nicholas, N. Lowndes and G.W Cholmondeley[?], Commissioners of the Excise Office, on behalf of William Mitcheson, Excise Office at Whitehaven in Cumberland, charged for the murder of Fergus Caruthers, on 17 March 1798. The coroner has justified the officer in such killing, but has bound over certain persons to prosecute and give evidence for murder. The commissioners therefore seek to request that a respite of execution will be issued in the event of Mitcheson being tried and convicted, so 'that the merits of the Case may be fully represented to His Majesty.' Folios 269-270.
