Georges Field and Southwark in Middlesex/London and Surrey) on behalf of James Wood, employee of the East India Company, convicted at the Old Bailey in the 'last April Session Holden at [the] Justice Hall', for stealing 3 books, value 2/-, property of the Honourable East India Company. There is a covering letter to the petition from H. Thornton on behalf of 'his Constituent' Mr Creese, and a letter from W. Ramsay to William Baldwin, on behalf of the Court of Directors of the East India Company, the court 'wish to decline interfering on the occasion'. Grounds for clemency: has worked for the East India Company for 18 years, previous good character, first offence, has a wife and 6 children to support and the prisoner is 45 years old ands 'is very infirm'. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Annotated 'unfavourable... In Consequence of a Letter from the Chairman to Mr Baldwin I was directed to prepare a free pardon'. Folios 261-266.
