1 collective petition (8 people, including the prisoner) on behalf of Richard Stroud, convicted at 'the Sessions at, Yarmouth, Norfolk,' on 14 September 1796, for stealing candles, value 4/-. There is a memorandum on behalf of Richard Stroud, Excise Officer, at present on the Lion hulk at Portsmouth Harbour awaiting transportation to New South Wales, stating that Stroud wishes to enter on board a 'Man of War' as he has a young wife and 3 children living, and a covering letter to the memorandum from William C------- about 'the poor Man about whom I troubled you before' asking for the prisoner to be allowed to serve on a man-of-war. Grounds for clemency: had been a man of credit in London but fell into misfortune due to losses in trade, is contrite, a healthy man, aged 26 and willing to serve in HM.
