Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (28 people, jury members and city tradesmen) on behalf of Giles Bouy, porter to prosecutor, convicted at the Old Bailey in April 1798, for stealing 5 yards of linen and printed calico, value 53/-, property of Jonathan Peele and partners, calico printers, on 30 March 1798. Evidences supplied by William Sorrell, porter to Peele; Daniel Cartwright, Mr Peele and the prisoner. The prisoner intended to take the goods to a pawnbroker, use the money to pay his rent, and redeem the goods at a later date. There is a note from Joseph Peele stating he has 'no objection to have mercy extended.' [A previous petition is noted to have been lost/mislaid and this collective petition is the second petition]. Grounds for clemency: previous good behaviour, first offence, recommended to mercy by the jury, has already served 7 months imprisonment and has a 3 months old child. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy; annotated 'a pardon must be made out). Folios 124-130.
