Description

Report of William Grant on 1 collective petition (21 people, from Haverfordwest, Nevern, Llwyn' Gwar, [Llwyngwair] and vicinity in Pembrokeshire) and 2 individual petitions (both from George Bowen addressed to Lord Milford and Hugh Barlow) on behalf of Mary Phillip and Simon Phillip, turner, (mother and son) convicted at Haverfordwest on 7 April 1798, for a burglary and stealing linen, regarded as of very trifling' value, and other items in the house and shop of 1) Caleb Evans, on 12 March 1798, at Eglwyswrw; and 2) David Lewis, in February (stolen on this count by Simon Phillip only). Evidences supplied by Caleb Evans, James Evans, constable; Owen Mathias, Jacob James, William Griffiths, David Lewis, dealer in linen; Hester James and Thomas John. In count 1) the shopkeeper's stables had been set alight and whilst they were putting out the fire the shop had been burgled. There are covering letters to the petitions from Lord Milford. Grounds for clemency: first offence, previous good character, jury presumed that the 2 people who had possession of the goods committed the burglary (but it appears Simon Phillip committed the burglary), Simon Phillip is a youth (20 years) and would be useful in HM. Forces, any remittance in Simon's sentence should therefore be provided for Mary. Initial sentence: death, respited. Recommendation: Simon Phillip, transportation for life. Mary Phillip: none made (her case should be at least as favourable). Folios 76-92.
