1 collective petition (163 people, including members of the trial jury, churchwardens and others of Wapping, Wapping Wall, Ratcliffe Highway and Shadwell in Middlesex, gives many address and trades/occupations) on behalf of John Archer, tallow chandler of Wapping, convicted at the Old Bailey in February 1798, for receiving 40lbs of stolen tallow, property of Messrs Kiddeys, on 10 January 1798. There is a letter from S. Weddell to R. Clark, indicting that the trial judge (Giles Rooke) would permit the prisoner to transport himself. Grounds for clemency: age (58 years), previous good character, has served his parish as overseer, constable and other offices 'as they came to his turn to serve', and has a wife and 3 small children to support. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Folios 52-57. See also HO 47/22/14, folios 67-70.
