Report of Beaumont Hotham on 1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (45 people, from Wortham, Blo Norton, [Shefton Hale], Garboldisham, Redgrave, Botesdale, Hindecley [Hindeclay], Rickinghall, Weston Hall, Lopham, South Lopham, Hopton in Norfolk and Suffolk, most occupations given, including 7 clergymen) on behalf of William Baldry, convicted at the Essex Assizes at Chelmsford, for 1) horse stealing; and 2) for stealing 6 heifers. Another stolen horse was found when the prisoner was apprehended. There is a covering letter to the petition from William Baldry senior (prisoner's father) sent to Sir Charles Bunbery, which begins 'I voted for you at the particular Request of Sir George Betts'. Grounds for clemency: first offence, from a decent family, persons signing his petition are of 'Credit', is contrite, and would be of service in HM. Forces in the East Indies. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 42-47.
