Description

Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (36 people, including people from Cookham Dean and Maidenhead, Berkshire, former employers, and endorsed by 6 others including the Mayor of Maidenhead, a magistrate, a minister and the Town Clerk of Maidenhead) and 2 individual petitions (both by the prisoner, 1 endorsed by a G. Van Settart) on behalf of Thomas Cutland/Thomas Cartland/Thomas Cutlan, brewery servant, convicted at the Old Bailey in February 1797, for stealing a cask, value 10/-, containing 24 gallons of ale, value 24/-, property of Thomas Starkey and John Jennings, brewers at Golden Square, on 24 January 1797. Evidences supplied by William Barker, clerk to Jennings and Starkey; James Ireland, watchman for the Parish of St. James and William Burnaby, servant to Jennings and Starkey. There is a letter from 5 previous employers (including a Thomas Cartland described a farmer and Cookham Dean on the collective petition) offering to employ the prisoner. Grounds for clemency: first offence, has an aged mother, a pregnant wife and infant child to support who are now chargeable on the parish, willing to join HM. Navy and has been offered employment if pardoned. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 99-108.
