Report of Wriothesley Digby, Steward of the City of Litchfield on George Hanley, a corporal in the 35th Regiment, indicted at Litchfield in Staffordshire on 26 December 1796, for the murder of George Miller, labourer but convicted of manslaughter. A dispute arose over a dog and a number of labourers threw stones and sticks at the soldiers. The prisoner drew his sword and hit one of the labourers and the labourer received a cut to the head, the labourer later died of his wounds. There is a letter from Colonel Charles Lennox confirming the prisoner's name. Initial sentence: 6 months hard labour in Litchfield Gaol. Recommendation: no mercy, most of the 6 months have already expired. Folios 74-77.
