Report of Soulden Lawrence on 1 individual petition (Richard Martin, prosecutor and cousin to the prisoner) on behalf of George Martin, convicted at the 'last' Gloucestershire Assizes (with 6 others [unnamed]), for horse stealing, property of Richard Martin, on 20 April 1795. Evidences supplied by Richard Martin, John Deffett/John Deffelt, lives at the Arsholt/Arshott Inn in Somerset; James Mogg, John Lilley, James Wilkins, William Gingell, George Buckingham, ------ Nibbett and James Ingo. There is a note from R.P. Whitton, Under Sheriff of Gloucestershire, recording the receipt of a respite from execution, dated 26 March 1797. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, is innocent, the whole is much distressed by the sentence, the prosecutor felt obliged to prosecute and is very distressed also, has a wife and 9 children to support all in distress. Initial sentence: death, respited. Recommendation: transportation for life. Folios 62-69. See also HO 47/21/16, folios 78-98.
