Report of Soulden Lawrence on 1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (13 people, from Gloucester including the vicar and churchwardens of Bisley and the gaoler of Gloucester Gaol) on behalf of Robert Jones, convicted at the City of Gloucester Spring Assizes, for stealing 2 leather shoes and 2 leather slippers, property of Margaret Dole, widow, shoe seller, on 27 January 'last'. Evidences provided by John Hicks, witness, Margaret Dole and the prisoner. There are covering letters from S. Lawrence dated 24 October 1796, and W. Hopkins, dated 19 October 1796. Ground for clemency: youth (28 years) petition signed by many respectable people and the prosecutrix wishes the prisoner to be relieved but does not want to sign the petition fearing she will affront her friends. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to serve in HM. Forces. Folios 326-332.
