Report of James Eyre on 1 collective petition (13 people, from Kings Ripton, Little Stukeley and Alconbury Lodge mainly farmers) on behalf of Elizabeth Gale, daughter of John Gale of Little Stukeley, convicted at the Huntingdonshire Summer Assizes in 1796, for stealing linen drapery and wearing apparel, value 39/-, property of William Garner and Jane Garner, on 25 April. The prisoner had previously worked for William Garner but had left 3 weeks earlier. Evidences supplied by "Elizabeth" Garner [Jane Garner?], Ann Richards, servant to William Garner; Elizabeth Gale and W. Lamb. There is a covering letter from Lord Sandwich dated 30 September 1796. Grounds for clemency: youth (18 years), father died when she was only 2 years old, previous good character and whilst working for Mr Lamb for 12 months often had responsibility of monies, is penitent, the prisoner also assisted other (sick) prisoners whilst in prison. Initial sentence: transportation. Recommendation: to transport herself. Folios 319-323.
