Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (15 people, from London) on behalf of Thomas Matthews, a journeyman blacksmith, convicted at the Old Bailey in May 1796, for stealing ironmongery, value £6:8:0, property of John Jackson and John Mosser/John Moser, owners of a large manufactory in Frith Street, Soho, Middlesex. The prisoner is currently in Newgate prison. Grounds for clemency: has a wife and 2 children, previous good character, is a young man (24 years) and is willing to serve in HM. Forces rather than be transported. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 311-314.
