Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 2 individual petitions (prisoner and Susannah Cordrey, the prisoner's wife) and 1 collective petition (32 local butchers and tradesmen from the Hay Market, Newport Market, Clare Market, Bloomsbury Market, Piccadilly in London/Middlesex) on behalf of George Cordrey, a butcher based in Newport Market Soho, London, convicted at the Old Bailey 'last' July, for receiving an ox proved to be stolen by James Rose (who was sentenced to death at the same sessions), property of Mr Ward and Mr Harper (Mr Harpur), farmers along the Edgeware Road [Edgware Road]. Grounds for clemency: age (56 years), previous good character, only convicted on slight evidence, that the prisoner had paid for the ox but could not prove this to be the case, that the prosecutor (John Harper) is a member of a society for the prosecution of felons, cheats, etc., and that members of this group were on the jury, has a wife who is unwell (refers to Dr Garthshore) and needs constant attention and support. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Recommendation: 5 years hard labour on the hulks or at the house of correction. Folios 243-248.
