Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (12 people, including the prosecutor) on behalf of Thomas Legg, convicted at the Old Bailey in September 1795, for stealing 14 lbs of lead, value 18d, affixed to the dwelling house of Richard Jefferies, his employer. Rose states that he has previously submitted a report on Legg (dated 26 January last) and that the case was aggravated by Legg's violence against his employer when apprehended. Grounds for clemency: first offence, has a wife and infant child already suffering much distress, offers to serve in the HM. Navy and has previously done so for 3 years. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 206-209. HO 47/20/4, folios 11-15.
