Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition (prisoner) on behalf of William Touse, posting clerk and servant to the prosecutor, convicted [at the Old Bailey] in September 1795, for stealing 20 gallons of rum, value £20, on 9 August 1795, property of Robert Jones. There are covering letters from Samuel Thornton and a Mr Bateman. Evidences provided by Robert Jones and 3 other. Grounds for clemency: prisoner comes from a respectable family from the East Riding of Yorkshire who are much distressed at the crime/sentence, he will already have learned his lesson from the time spent in Newgate, first offence, and offers to join HM. Navy. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 194-201.
