Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 individual petition from (prisoner) and 1 collective petition (15 people, from Clerkenwell, Islington and Cripplegate and vicinity, in Middlesex/London) on behalf of John Wilson, convicted at the Old Bailey in September 1795, for stealing 36 yards of satin ribbon, value £1.10.0, property of James Philby and Co. haberdasher. Evidence supplied by James Philby. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, 5 character witnesses gave evidence, first offence, has a wife and 3 children, the crime was committed with no aggravation and offers to serve in HM. Navy. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: to serve in HM. Forces in the East or West India service. Annotated, 'Let a pardon be made out for John Wilson to give Security for his good Behaviour on the recommendation & Consent of the Prosecutor'. There is also a letter from Philby (26 July 1797) giving his consent to the pardon. Folios 184-189.
