Report of Soulden Lawrence on 1 collective petition (3 people: Thomas Williams, the prosecutor, and two magistrates from the Borough of Newbury, one being the mayor) on behalf of Michael Murray, an Irishman, convicted at the Berkshire Assizes at Reading on 1 August 'last', for assault and robbery, stealing a watch, a guinea and some silver, property of Thomas Williams, at Greenham near Newbury. Lawrence suggests that Portland sends a general respite for the prisoner to the Sheriff of Berkshire, since he had intended to recommend transportation (the date of execution being Saturday next). Covering letter from Charles Dunlon[?]. Grounds for clemency: first offence and a stranger to the magistrates. Initial sentence: death. Recommendation: transportation. Folios 52-57.
