Description

Report of James Harvey, Mayor [of Bristol] on 1 collective petition (20 people including the prisoner's father, also Thomas Harrill) on behalf of Thomas Harrill, labourer and previously the shopman to the prosecutors, convicted at the Bristol City Quarter Sessions on 21 October 1795, for stealing 2 guineas on 8 September 1795, property of William Bulgin and William Sheppard, booksellers and stationers in Bristol. Evidences given by William Bulgin, Hawkins Bird, George Biggs, Richard Edols, J. Pullin, Henry Brown, W. Weymouth, George Thompson, and Jonathan Phillips. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, respectability of those giving character statements at the trial and that if released he might provide support to an elderly father and atone for the crime. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 45-49.
