Report of John William Rose, Recorder of London, on 1 collective petition (32 people, including the prisoner, prosecutor, magistrate and rector at Stanford-le-hope and Liston in Essex, and others in the Camden Town, Hampstead area in Middlesex) on behalf of Thomas Legg, bricklayer, convicted at the 'last' Old Bailey in September, for stealing 14lbs weight of lead, value 18d (the hopper part of a drain pipe) from a dwelling of Richard Jefferies/Richard Jefferys, carpenter. When apprehended by Jefferies, Legg used violence and later escaped. Evidences from Richard Jefferies, the prisoner and 7 others. Grounds for clemency: previous good character, wife and infant to support, first offence, has served 3 or 4 years at sea and wishes to serve at sea as an alternative punishment. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: no mercy. Folios 11-15. HO 47/20/38, folios 206-209.
