Report of Edward Bearcroft on 1 collective petition (89 people, freeholders and once neighbours to the prisoner, Derbyshire, the petition annotated 'Letter sent to Mr Bradley to enquire as to character') on behalf of Thomas Jones, convicted at the Chester Assizes, in September 1791 for an aggravated burglary (with 3 unnamed others). The 3 others were executed [but it appears Jones probably saved the life of a constable]. There is a letter from a Mr Mundy, and an unsigned note, which states that Jones was considered 'a very sly artful person' and states the trial date as 12 May 1792. Grounds for clemency: has been on the hulks for four years and is willing to serve in HM. Forces. Initial sentence: death, commuted to transportation for life. Recommendation: mercy, on condition he enlists in HM. services. Folios 259-265.
