Report of James Eyre on 3 collective petitions (19 people, of Great Catworth, Huntingdonshire, addressed to the Duke of Bedford; 53 people, of Newport Pagnall, [Buckinghamshire] Cranfield [Bedfordshire] and Little Brickhill [Bedfordshire], includes occupations; and 22 people, of Brickhill [Bedfordshire] and Aylesbury [Buckinghamshire]) on behalf of Edward Edis, publican at Brickhill, Buckinghamshire, convicted for receiving trusses of hay, knowing them to be stolen, property of the Duke of Bedford. There is a covering letter to the petitions from the Duke of Bedford. Grounds for clemency: he was encouraged by others to commit the crime, first offence, previous good character, has an aged mother and father, wife and 4 small children would suffer distress if sentence is carried through. Initial sentence: 14 years transportation. Recommendation: 2 years imprisonment in the house of correction: annotated to that effect. Folios 142-153.
